Foundation Guide - The Children's Scoliosis Foundation

Mission

The Children’s Scoliosis Foundation is a non-profit organization with a mission to support children with scoliosis and their families. The foundation promotes awareness of the condition and works to advance the science behind scoliosis detection. The ultimate goal is to improve the prevention and treatment of scoliosis.

The organization also offers medical travel grants to families of children in need of specialized treatments for scoliosis involving a bracing or surgical specialist and aids in advancing scoliosis research and awareness.

The Children’s Scoliosis Foundation distributes care packages with stuffed animals and journals to children scheduled to receive a new brace or undergoing surgery. The grants are given directly to the families in need. The foundation awarded over $15,000 in travel grants to families in 2020, and over 240 Higgy Bears were distributed worldwide to children in need.

Supported Causes

The Children’s Scoliosis Foundation supports causes that affect the lives of children who have scoliosis and the families in need of assistance of expenses related to travel for treatment of scoliosis in these children.

Projects

Some of the Children’s Scoliosis Foundation’s most significant projects are:

Travel Grants

The Children’s Scoliosis Foundation provides grants for children and their families traveling for medical procedures. Up to $500 per trip is available for national trips and up to $750 per trip for international trips. The grants cover hotel costs, airfare or car rental, parking, and gas.

Screening

The foundation gives detailed guidance on:

  • How and when a parent should have a child screened for scoliosis.
  • What happens during a screening test.
  • The accuracy of the screening tests.
  • Guidance on what warrants referrals.
  • Why no-dose or low-dose imaging is essential for children with scoliosis.

Care Packages

Parents of children about to undergo scoliosis surgery or have a new brace fitted can apply for a Children’s Scoliosis Foundation Care Pack. The packs are created to help brighten the child’s trip and contain pencils, a coloring book, stickers, a travel journal, and a gift certificate for a plush friend from Higgy Bears.

Awareness Wristbands

The Children’s Scoliosis Foundation created Scoliosis Strong Wristbands and sells these bands in sets of four. The wristbands are made of 100% silicone and come in various designs. The goal of this project is to create awareness of scoliosis and to raise funds for the foundation. All proceeds go towards the Care Packs project and the Travel Grants project.

The Foundation's History

The Children’s Scoliosis Foundation began helping children in 2016. Since then, the organization has raised over $200,000 for the cause. Through their efforts, they have given children who have scoliosis and their families and caregivers a new lease on life through a better understanding of childhood scoliosis and an improved support system.
