Foundation Guide - Northern Charitable Foundation

Mission

The Northern Charitable Foundation supports initiatives that improve people’s health and quality of life. Their mission is to assist and empower disadvantaged groups. Under the leadership of Rosa and Alex Dembitzer, the foundation forms and supports various programs in the realm of public health and deals with hereditary cancer, Alzheimer’s disease and stem cell transplants. The NCF is committed to forming partnerships with established organizations and creating new programs for local communities

Supported Causes

Projects funded by the Northern Charitable Foundation must have the goal of improving the lives of adults and children who have major health issues or are in need of educational empowerment.

  • Ezer Mizion – an Israeli health support organization that offers a wide range of social and medical services to sick, disabled, elderly and underprivileged populations. The NCF funded the construction of the Ezer Mizion Headquarters and supports several programs led by the organization.
  • Early detection of BRCA mutations – One in 40 Ashkenazi Jews are BRCA mutation carriers, and so at higher risk of breast and/or ovarian cancer. The Dembitzer family and the NCF have made it their mission to drastically reduce the risk of death among carriers by raising awareness and improving access to testing.
  • Alzheimer’s disease – raising awareness about the disease, and the challenges of caring for people who suffer from it.

Projects

  • Jacob Fried Building – the Northern Charitable Foundation was the driving force behind the construction of the Ezer Mizion headquarters in Bnei Brak, Israel.
  • Ezer Mizion Bone Marrow Donor Registry–the Dembitzer family established a personalized donor pool within the Ezer Mizion Bone Marrow Donor Registry. The Ezer Mizion Registry has completed close to 2,500 donor-patient matches and over 2,200 stem cell transplants as in 2017.
  • Alzheimer Center Tzippora Fried– this project is sponsored by Mrs. Jackie Fried in memory of her late mother who suffered from Alzheimer’s. It consists of six centers all over Israel that support over 2000 patients and their families by providing information and guidance, counselling meetings and caregiver support groups.
  • Prevention GENEration– the program was started by Alex and Rosa Dembitzer after Rosa was diagnosed with breast cancer and ovarian cancer. As the disease was passed down through her father’s genes, and no one in her family had suffered from cancer before her, she did not know that she may be a carrier of the BRCA mutation. After a long and difficult battle against the disease, the Dembitzers decided to launch the program and start working with the Israel Cancer Foundation to help prevent others from suffering like this. As of 2017, over 40,000 people in Israel have taken its online questionnaire. Thanks to widely distributed brochures in Hebrew, English, Russian and Arabic the majority of the population has access to vital information about the importance of early-detection. The program operates in eight Israeli hospitals.
  • Israel Tennis Centers National Girls Teams– six teams of 60 girls from all over Israel. The goal of the project is to empower young female players and develop their leadership abilities as well as their tennis skills.
  • Independent Living Association
  • Aleh Foundation
  • Alyn Hospital Pediatric & Adolescent Rehabilitation Center
  • Dana Farber Cancer Institute
  • Kenya Education Fund
