The William S. Abell Foundation provides grants to organizations and programs that support very specific sectors of the population. These include, feeding the hungry, support of the homeless, abused women and children, help and support for at-risk pregnancies and people with intellectual disabilities.
The foundation operates on strictly Catholic principles.
Grants for the hungry focus on community organizations providing meal programs, transport of meals to individuals and food pantries. Grants from the foundation for the homeless include homeless shelters and transitional housing programs. The foundation works extensively in the support for programs that provide emergency services to abused women and children, including social services, housing, financial support, health services and crisis counselling. Support for programs that provide help to women with at-risk pregnancies or crisis pregnancies include pre-natal services, general health services including physician and obstetric nursing services. The foundations also supports programs for the intellectually disabled.
The William S. Abell Foundation supports the hungry, homeless, intellectually challenged, abused women and children and provides support for at-risk pregnant mothers.
Grants from the William S. Abell Foundation do not usually exceed $25 000 and are not made to individuals, nor to organizations in consecutive years. The foundation accepts requests for grants on invitation only and all organizations must be IRS-qualified, tax exempt organizations with the special proviso that all organizations be 501 (c) (3) organizations that do not have a 509 (a) (1) or (2) status or not included in Section 170(b)(1)(A)(i),(ii), (iii), (iv), (v) or (vi) on an IRS Letter.
The William S. Abell Foundation supports dozens of programs each year.
Hungry Grants 2014:

To provide a hot lunch four days a week for 100 food insecure people. $25,000
Community Support Systems, Inc.
To support the food pantry programs. $30,000

To provide well balanced home delivered meals to homebound seniors. $25,000

Meals every Friday for 2,320 food insecure elementary school children in Gaithersburg, MD

To support homeless women and their children residing at the Good Hope transitional $25,000
Bethel House Incorporated
To support the Love In Action Program in placing eighteen homeless families or homeless $25,000
Abused Women and Children Grants 2014:
Asian Pacific American Legal Resource
To support the Legal Assistance for Victims of Domestic Violence Project $25,000
Bright Beginnings, Inc.
To provide comprehensive case management for women and children $25,000
Center for Child Protection and Family
To provide women who are victims of abuse and who live at emergency shelters $25,000
The William S. Abell Foundation was founded in 1985 by William S. Abell and Patricia O’C. Abell. The foundation is supported by a bequest from the Margaret Abell Powell Foundation to continue its good work in the community.
